Ouezzane

Shrine of Rabbi Amram Ben Diwan

The largest Jewish pilgrimage in Morocco. Rif Mountain foothills. Thousands arrive every May.

Rabbi Amram Ben Diwan came from Palestine in the 1770s to collect funds for yeshivas in Hebron. Trapped in Meknes for seven years by political instability. Died in Ouezzane.

Thousands attend the annual hiloula each May. From Israel, from France, from Canada. Four continents. The ceremony includes candle auctions — enormous tapers, some weighing kilos — with proceeds funding the shrine's upkeep. Dignitaries attend, including representatives of the King.

The largest Jewish pilgrimage in Morocco. In the foothills of the Rif. The shrine is maintained year-round by local caretakers.
