14+ million visitors, seasonal peaks, source markets, spending patterns — Morocco's tourism data


Morocco received over 14.5 million international tourists in 2023, and the numbers continue to climb. The target is 26 million by 2030 — coinciding with the World Cup. Tourism contributes approximately 7% of GDP directly and significantly more when indirect employment and supply chains are counted.

France is the largest source market — historically over 20% of total arrivals, driven by language, colonial history, direct flights, and a large Moroccan diaspora. Spain is second, benefiting from geographic proximity and ferry connections. The UK, Germany, and increasingly the United States complete the top five European and North American markets.

Moroccan diaspora tourism — Moroccans Residing Abroad (MRE) returning to visit family — accounts for a significant share of arrivals, particularly in summer. The MRE traffic peaks in July and August when European-based Moroccans return with their families. They tend to stay longer but spend less per night on commercial accommodation, staying with family instead.

Marrakech dominates. The city receives more international tourists than any other Moroccan destination — roughly 3 million per year. Agadir is second, driven by beach and package tourism. Fes, Casablanca, Tangier, Essaouira, and Ouarzazate follow. The government's strategy aims to redistribute tourists to less-visited regions — the north, the east, the oases — but Marrakech's gravitational pull is strong.

Seasonality is pronounced. Peak season runs from March to May and September to November — spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild. Summer is hot in the interior but busy on the coast. Winter is low season everywhere except the Saharan edge, where cool desert temperatures attract visitors.

Average tourist spending is approximately $90 per day. Luxury tourists in Marrakech riads spend multiples of this. Budget backpackers in hostels spend a fraction. The government's strategic push is toward higher-spending tourists — hence the investment in luxury infrastructure, golf courses, and the Marrakech conference circuit.
