Gnawa is not music. It is medicine. The descendants of sub-Saharan slaves brought with them a healing practice that fused with Moroccan Sufism to become something found nowhere else on earth. The lila — the night ceremony — is not entertainment. It is negotiation with the unseen. This journey follows the road of the maâlems, from Essaouira to Marrakech to the zawiyas of the south. By the end, you will understand why the guembri sounds the way it does.
