The Southern Oases & Caravan Route — Ten Days of Earth and Memory
Duration: 10 days / 9 nights
Arc: Ouarzazate → Agdz → Tamnougalt → Zagora → M’Hamid → Erg Chigaga → Foum Zguid → Taliouine → Taroudant → Marrakech
Essence: A slow journey along Morocco’s oldest caravan road — where kasbahs crumble into sand and palm groves whisper their own history.
Between palm groves and clay walls, the ancient trade road unfolds — quiet villages, carved doors, and the long breath of the desert.
Day 1 – Ouarzazate
Arrival in Ouarzazate, crossroads of caravans and cinema. Visit Kasbah Taourirt, an earthen fortress glowing like embers at dusk. Dinner under a pale desert sky.
Day 2 – Ouarzazate to Tamnougalt
Drive south through the Tizi n’Tinfifte Pass. The landscape opens into the first sight of the Drâa Valley, a green thread between ochre hills.
Day 3 – Tamnougalt
Walk through the oasis of Tamnougalt, a labyrinth of clay and light. Old alleys whisper the rhythm of caravans once bound for Timbuktu.Lunch beneath palms; night in a restored kasbah surrounded by silence.
Day 4 – Tamnougalt to Zagora
Follow the Drâa River, its banks lined with palms and earthen villages. Arrive in Zagora, where markets still trade desert goods and time bends around the heat.
Day 5 – Zagora to M’Hamid
Drive to M’Hamid, last village before the Sahara. The road dissolves into sand; the wind carries only whispers of the caravans that once passed.
Day 6 – M’Hamid to Erg Chigaga
Journey by 4x4 or camel caravan into Erg Chigaga, the wildest dunes in Morocco. Camp deep among their shifting forms. Silence becomes its own language.
Day 7 – Erg Chigaga to Foum Zguid
Cross the Iriqui plain, white and endless. Reach Foum Zguid, a small desert town that smells of dust and mint tea.
Day 8 – Foum Zguid to Taliouine
The dunes recede into hills of gold and sage. Visit a saffron cooperative in Taliouine, where spice becomes scent, and scent becomes memory.
Day 9 – Taliouine to Taroudant
Drive west into the fertile Souss Valley. Arrive in Taroudant, city of artisans and shade. Explore markets of leather and silver, rest in a courtyard where water cools the air.
Day 10 – Taroudant to Marrakech
Depart through argan groves and winding passes. Lunch en route as the land rises and green returns.
By afternoon, the gates of Marrakech appear — the journey’s circle closing in red and gold light.
