The Southern Loop – From Dunes to the Sea

Duration: 12 days / 11 nights
Arc: From the red city across the High Atlas to the deep desert, through stone valleys and argan hills, returning by the Atlantic wind.

A slow circle through Morocco’s deep south — over the High Atlas, across dunes and salt flats, through saffron valleys and granite hills, ending where desert light meets the sea.

Day 1 – Marrakech

Arrival in Marrakech. Settle into your riad, walk through quiet alleys scented with orange blossom, and watch the city turn to amber at dusk.

Day 2 – High Atlas to Aït Benhaddou

Drive over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, stopping for coffee above the valleys. Descend to Aït Benhaddou, a citadel of clay and light. Wander its quiet alleys before the evening wind rises.

Day 3 – Aït Benhaddou to Zagora

Continue south through oases and kasbahs. The Drâa Valley stretches like a green thread through red earth. Arrive in Zagora, the last palm outpost before the desert.

Day 4 – Zagora to Erg Chigaga

Leave the paved road at M’Hamid and cross the plains toward Erg Chigaga. Camel ride or 4×4 into the dunes. Sunset turns the sand to liquid light. Dinner and night beneath the stars.

Day 5 – Across Iriki to Foum Zguid

Breakfast in the dunes, then drive across the Iriki salt lake, an endless sheet of silence. Reach Foum Zguid by afternoon and rest in a desert lodge shaded by palms.

Day 6 – Foum Zguid to Taliouine

Climb into saffron country, where purple flowers bloom between stones. Stop in Tazenakht for carpets, arrive in Taliouine for a quiet evening among almond trees.

Day 7 – Taliouine to Tafraoute

Drive west through the Anti-Atlas, crossing a landscape of granite and silence. Arrive in Tafraoute, a town of stone valleys and painted light.

Day 8 – Tafraoute to Agadir

Descend from the mountains to the coast. The scent of the ocean returns slowly through the argan forests. Evening in Agadir, where the air tastes of salt again.

Day 9 – Agadir to Essaouira

Follow the coast north through fishing villages and windswept dunes. Stop for lunch overlooking the sea, then continue to Essaouira, the white port of wind and calm.

Day 10 – Essaouira

A full day by the sea. Walk the medina, visit ateliers and cafés, or simply watch waves break against the ramparts.

Day 11 – Essaouira to Marrakech

Return inland through argan groves and small villages. The red walls of Marrakech appear again by late afternoon. Evening free in the medina.

Day 12 – Marrakech

A quiet morning in the city before departure. Tea in the courtyard, sun on the walls, the road still echoing in your mind.
