The Compass of Morocco

Duration: 15 days / 14 nights
Arc: From the Atlantic shore through mountains and desert, returning to the sea.

A complete circle through Morocco’s landscapes and light — from white coastal cities to blue mountain towns, golden dunes, and ocean winds. Each stop reveals a different direction of the compass, all bound by the same calm rhythm.

Day 1 – Casablanca

Arrival in Morocco’s modern heart. Casablanca opens the circle — white façades, ocean air, and quiet confidence. Walk along the Corniche or stand before the Hassan II Mosque, where stone meets sea. The journey begins with salt, light, and horizon.

Day 2 – Rabat

Follow the coast north to Rabat, Morocco’s serene capital. Visit the Kasbah des Oudayas, where blue walls meet ocean mist, and wander the peaceful gardens near the Hassan Tower. Rabat feels measured — elegant, understated, a pause before the mountains.

Day 3 – Chefchaouen

The road turns inland toward the Rif Mountains. Arrive in Chefchaouen, a town painted in quiet shades of sky. Wander its blue lanes, hear the echo of footsteps on stone, and watch sunlight slide across the walls. Time slows; even the air feels soft here.

Day 4 – Volubilis & Meknès

Depart Chefchaouen for the plains of the north. Among olive groves, the ruins of Volubilis rise quietly — a mosaic of stone and sky. Walk through its arches and scattered marble before continuing to Meknès, once an imperial capital. Visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the great Bab Mansour gate in the soft afternoon light. Evening in a riad within the old city — stillness behind ancient walls.

Day 5 – Fès

Travel east to Fès, Morocco’s quiet soul. Arrive by midday and settle into your riad, hidden behind plain walls that open into carved calm. In the afternoon, step into Palais Amani’s cooking atelier, where Fassi cuisine is taught with grace and precision. Spices, citrus, and saffron fill the air. As dusk settles, dine on your own creation — a soft entry into the golden rhythm of the city.

Day 6 – Fès

A full day to wander the golden labyrinth. Visit the Bou Inania Medersa, the Karaouiyine University, and the tanneries where color and scent merge in timeless ritual. Step through alleys of brass and cedar, pause for tea above the rooftops, and listen to the layered rhythm of the city — prayer, hammer, footsteps, silence. In the evening, return to your riad as the call to prayer echoes through the honey light.

Day 7 – The Road South

Leave the medina’s maze behind and drive south through the highlands. The road climbs into cedar forests where Barbary macaques dart between the trees, then descends toward wide, open plains. Stop in Azrou for a breath of mountain air, continue past Midelt where snow sometimes dusts the peaks, and watch the palette shift from green to gold. The light grows stronger, the air drier — the desert is near.

Day 8 – The Sahara

Dawn in the dunes — cool air, soft light, the slow breath of the desert. After breakfast, set out beyond camp: fossil beds shimmer under the sun, and nomads pour tea beneath their woven tents. Lunch unfolds in the shade of an oasis where palm shadows ripple over sand. Return to camp as evening light returns to gold. The night stretches wide, silent, infinite.

Day 9 – Todgha Gorge

The road turns west through Tinejdad, Tinghir, and the ochre cliffs of the Todgha Gorge, where light carves the rock into flame. Continue through the Valley of Roses and the oases of Skoura, then the desert plain widens again. By late afternoon, the kasbah of Aït Benhaddou appears — a sculpted fortress of earth and sun. Wander its alleys as dusk softens the clay; this is Morocco’s architecture at its most elemental.

Day 10 – Marrakech

Cross the High Atlas through the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where snow peaks meet desert valleys. Arrive in Marrakech by early afternoon and lunch in the new city before visiting the Jardin Majorelle — an oasis of cobalt and calm. By evening, settle into your riad in the medina, where the scent of orange blossom drifts through the courtyards.

Day 11 – Marrakech

A day to feel the city’s rhythm. Explore the medina, its souks alive with metal, leather, and light. Pause in shaded courtyards, shop for crafts and carpets, and lunch in a hidden riad. As evening falls, wander through the Jemaa el-Fna and taste the city’s spirit — spices, steam, and laughter rising into the warm night.

Day 12 – Essaouira

Drive west through argan groves and open plains to the ocean. Essaouira welcomes you with salt air and still rhythm — white walls, blue doors, and the endless sound of waves. Walk the ramparts, visit artisans’ studios, and enjoy lunch by the port. Stay by the sea; let the wind carry time away.

Day 13 – Casablanca

Depart Essaouira after breakfast and follow the Atlantic north. The road traces the coastline back to Casablanca, where modern Morocco meets the sea once more. Evening at leisure — ocean light, soft wind, a quiet dinner by the shore.

Day 14 – Casablanca

Morning visit to the Hassan II Mosque, its marble and ocean meeting in perfect balance. Continue with an architecture walk through Casablanca’s Art Deco avenues — a quiet dialogue between tradition and modern grace. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner overlooking the Atlantic. The circle closes where it began: at the edge of light and sea.

Day 15 – Casablanca

A final morning on the coast. Breakfast by the sea, the sound of waves against stone. Morocco remains — in light, color, and memory.
