The Ounila Valley
Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
Arc: From Marrakech across the High Atlas, through the secret Ounila Valley, to the oases of the Drâa — sleeping in a centuries-old kasbah.
A journey into Morocco’s hidden south. Mountains, valleys, and fortresses of clay — where time moves slowly, and the walls remember.
Day 1 – The Ounila Valley
Depart Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, where snow-tipped peaks rise above olive valleys. Visit the forgotten Kasbah of Telouet, once the Glaoui palace, its faded mosaics still shimmering in dust and shadow. Follow the narrow road into the Ounila Valley — Morocco’s most secret passage — where clay villages cling to red cliffs and green terraces line the river. Stop in Anemiter and Tamedakhte, quiet strongholds frozen in time. Overnight near the valley, surrounded by earthen silence.
Day 2 – Tamnougalt
Continue south through the Valley of Ouarzazate to the palm groves of Agdz. Here begins the Drâa Valley, a green corridor of date palms and ancient forts. Arrive at Tamnougalt by afternoon and settle inside the Kasbah des Caïds, a living museum of earth and memory. Explore its labyrinth of rooms and terraces overlooking the oasis. Evening by candlelight, the desert wind whispering through thick walls.
Day 3 – Marrakech
After breakfast, leave the oasis and retrace the valley north to Aït Benhaddou, the most famous ksar of the south. Walk its steep alleys and watch light sweep across the towers. After lunch, return to Marrakech via the High Atlas, reaching the red city by evening. The road has changed — and so has your sense of time.
