The Romans in Morocco: Stones and Silence
6 days / 5 nights
Tangier → Larache (Lixus) → Moulay Idriss & Volubilis → Meknes → Rabat → Casablanca
A journey through the empire’s western horizon — where Rome met Africa and left its memory in marble, olive, and dust. Two thousand years ago, this land was the empire’s edge. The legions are gone, but the geometry of their world remains — mosaics beneath olive branches, roads fading into fields, order dissolving into sunlight.
Day 1 – Tangier
Arrive in Tangier, where Rome called this the Tingitana frontier. Visit the archaeological museum — coins, amphorae, fragments of empire. Evening walk along the Strait where two continents watch each other.
Day 2 – Larache & Lixus
Drive south to Larache. Above the river lies Lixus — once a Phoenician and Roman city, where legend says Hercules gathered golden apples. Walk among the columns; the sea wind is the only voice. Overnight nearby.
Day 3 – Volubilis
Journey inland toward Moulay Idriss. Spend the day among mosaics and fallen arches. The site still breathes geometry — everything aligned toward a vanished order. Evening in the nearby hills.
Day 4 – Meknes
Visit Meknes, where imperial Morocco echoed Rome’s symmetry centuries later. Explore Heri es-Souani and the royal stables — monumental calm that feels half Roman, half Moroccan.
Day 5 – Rabat
Continue to Rabat to walk the Chellah necropolis — once a Roman city, now a medieval shrine. Time collapses: Latin stones, Islamic calligraphy, birds nesting in both.
Day 6 – Casablanca
End in Casablanca. Visit the Archaeological Museum or simply stand by the ocean — where Rome’s world ended and Morocco’s began.
