The Southern Remnants

Duration: 9 days / 8 nights
Arc: Marrakech → Taliouine → Ifrane Atlas Saghir → Akka → Tamanart → Amtoudi → Agadir
Essence: A desert pilgrimage through Morocco’s forgotten Jewish south — where ancient mellahs and caravan wells still hold the breath of vanished traders and saints.

South of the Atlas, memory takes the shape of dust and endurance. This is the last chapter of Jewish Morocco — a journey through forgotten oases and the remnants of faith carved in stone.

Day 1 – Marrakech

Begin in the red city. Walk the old mellah, visit the Lazama synagogue, and set intention for the road south — a journey into the long echo of coexistence.

Day 2 – Taliouine

Climb through argan and almond valleys toward Taliouine. The air grows thinner, scented with spice and wind. Nearby villages still keep traces of the old mellahs, faded but remembered.

Day 3 – Ifrane Atlas Saghir

Reach Ifrane Atlas Saghir, once a southern center of Jewish scholarship. Visit the ruins of the old houses, the restored synagogue, and the rock inscriptions that speak in symbols older than text.

Day 4 – Akka

Descend into Akka, where palm groves hide forgotten shrines. The shrine of Rabbi David Ben Baroukh lies near the ancient caravan wells; water and prayer once shared the same sound.

Day 5 – Tamanart

Travel the road once used by Jewish and Amazigh merchants linking the Sahara to the sea. In Tamanart, the mellah survives as faint walls beneath date palms — a whisper of commerce and faith.

Day 6 – Toward Amtoudi

Drive west through barren plateaus. The land feels stripped and ancient. Each ruin could be a kasbah or a granary — or a memory mistaken for one.

Day 7 – Amtoudi

Climb to the agadir that once guarded caravans of salt and faith. The stones are perfectly fitted, the doors small as if humility were architecture.

Day 8 – Agadir

The mountains yield to the ocean. The journey ends where exile meets tide — grain turned to salt, prayer turned to wind.

Day 9 – Agadir

Departure from Agadir.
