Marrakech to Erg Chigaga
Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
Arc: From the red city through mountain passes and palm valleys to the untamed dunes of the deep south.
A three-day passage into Morocco’s wild south. Across the Atlas and the Drâa Valley, toward dunes that shift with the wind and stars that fall close to earth.
Day 1 — Marrakech to Tamnougalt
Depart Marrakech before sunrise and climb the Tizi n’Tichka Pass through folded Atlas peaks. Pause in Aït Benhaddou for coffee amid its sun-baked walls, then follow the old caravan road into the Drâa Valley — a vast ribbon of palms, mud-brick villages, and earth-colored kasbahs. Arrive by evening at Tamnougalt, the ancient kasbah of the caïds, where time moves to the rhythm of river and dust.
Day 2 — Tamnougalt to Erg Chigaga
Depart Tamnougalt after breakfast and trace the Drâa Valley southward through palms and earthen villages. Pass Zagora, then leave the paved road beyond M’Hamid — where the landscape opens into raw desert. Continue by 4x4 across the dunes of Erg Chigaga, reaching camp by late afternoon. Sunset over the vast sand sea, dinner by the fire, and a night under unbroken stars.
Day 3 — Erg Chigaga to Marrakech
After breakfast, cross the shimmering Iriki salt flat, where the sky reflects on dry earth. Rejoin the desert track through Foum Zguid and the foothills of the Atlas. By evening, Marrakech appears again — red walls glowing against the memory of dunes.
