Spanish Mosque

Never finished, now an unintentional landmark. The Spanish built it during occupation, then abandoned it. The view is the reason to climb — the entire blue medina spread below.

The mosque was never finished. The Spanish built it during their occupation of northern Morocco in the early 20th century, then abandoned it. The shell remains — an unintentional landmark on the hill above Chefchaouen. The view is the reason to come. The entire medina spreads below — a blue wash against brown mountains, the kasbah tower rising from the centre. On clear days, the Rif Mountains stack into the distance. Sunset is popular, but sunrise is better (and emptier). The walk takes 20-30 minutes from Ras el-Maa. The path is clear but steep in places; proper shoes help. Shepherds graze goats on the hillside. The mosque itself is just walls — there's nothing inside to see. But the vantage point is the best in town. Best time: Sunrise or sunset Allow: 1.5 hours (including walk) Combine with: Ras el-Maa on the descent
