Mellah of Sefrou in Sefrou, Morocco - Historic Quarter

Mellah of Sefrou

They called it Little Jerusalem. A mountain town where the Jewish community ran the cherry trade.

They called it Little Jerusalem.

Sefrou. A mountain town in the Middle Atlas, thirty kilometres south of Fes. The Jewish population was significant enough to earn the name. The community played a central role in the region's cherry trade — the annual cherry festival still happens, though the Jewish merchants who built the industry are gone.

The old quarter is visible, the distinctive architecture intact. Sefrou's mellah is less visited than Fes or Marrakech — which is precisely its value. A place where the story is told by the buildings themselves, without interpretation or curation.
