One of the few Islamic shrines in Morocco that non-Muslims may enter. Sultan Moulay Ismail ruled for 55 years, fathered hundreds of children, and built Meknes into an imperial capital. He also kept 25,000 slaves. History is complicated. The mausoleum reflects his ambitions: courtyards leading to courtyards, fountains and zellige, the tomb itself in a chamber of carved stucco and Carrara marble. Moroccan royal guards in traditional dress stand watch. The atmosphere is solemn, genuinely religious. Remove your shoes at the entrance. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Photography is usually permitted in the courtyards but not near the tomb. The mausoleum is an active place of worship; you are a guest. Best time: Morning (fewer visitors) Allow: 45 minutes Combine with: Bab Mansour and Place el-Hedim
