The mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, founder of the Alaouite dynasty — the royal house that has ruled Morocco since 1666 and continues to rule today. King Mohammed VI is a direct descendant. The mausoleum in Rissani is the dynastic origin point: the place where the family that would eventually produce the current king first established its religious and political authority.
