Mellah of Rabat in Rabat, Morocco - Historic Quarter

Rabat

Mellah of Rabat

Near the Kasbah of the Udayas. Where Mohammed V made the decision that defined modern Morocco.

Smaller, quieter than the others. Folded into the administrative calm of a capital city.

But this is where the political story happened. When Vichy France demanded Morocco deport its Jews during World War II, Sultan Mohammed V refused. The famous quote: 'There are no Jews in Morocco. There are only Moroccan subjects.' The refusal came from the palace, near this quarter, near these streets.

Rabat's Jewish community numbered approximately 400 at last count. Small but present. The Talmud Torah Synagogue is restored and maintained. The cemetery sits near the Kasbah of the Udayas, tombstones facing Jerusalem. Walking distance from the palace that protected them.
