Mellah of Salé

The Jewish quarter of Salé, established in the 17th century within the medina walls. The community was closely linked to the corsair economy — Jewish merchants served as intermediaries in the ransom trade, negotiating the release of European captives with their families. The mellah's distinctive architecture survives in the carved stone doorways and wrought iron balconies of its main lane.
