Salé Medina

The twin city of Rabat across the Bou Regreg river — older, poorer, less visited, and more honest. Salé was the pirate republic. In the 17th century the Salé Rovers raided as far as Iceland and Cornwall, taking slaves and ransoms. Miguel de Cervantes was ransomed from here. The medina that the corsairs built is still largely intact across the river.
