Morocco has five climate zones operating simultaneously. The Atlantic coast is mild year-round. The interior plains bake in summer and chill in winter. The Atlas Mountains get snow from December to March. The Sahara is scorching from June to September and perfect from October to April. And the Rif in the north gets more rain than you expect.
The short answer: March to May and October to November. Warm days, cool nights, wildflowers in the Atlas, comfortable medina temperatures, and the Sahara at its most bearable. These are the shoulder seasons, and they are the sweet spot.
If you want heat: June through August. Marrakech hits 40-45°C. The medina becomes an oven with a roof. Essaouira, two and a half hours west, rarely exceeds 25°C because the Atlantic trade winds cool it constantly — this is why Marrakchis flee there every summer. The Sahara in July is not advisable unless you have a specific interest in suffering.
If you want the desert: October to April. Daytime temperatures are warm but manageable. Nights are cold — genuinely cold, single digits in December and January. Bring layers. The stars are worth the chill.
If you want the mountains: June to September for trekking. Snow closes the high passes from December to February, but that is also when Oukaimeden opens for skiing. The Tizi n'Tichka pass to the south remains open year-round but can be icy in January.
Ramadan shifts the rhythm. The dates move earlier each year — in 2026 it falls roughly late February to late March. Restaurants close during daylight hours. The medinas are quiet by day and electric after sunset when everyone eats together. It is a beautiful time to visit if you adjust your schedule. It is a frustrating time if you expect lunch.
Avoid the two weeks around Eid al-Adha if you are squeamish. Every family sacrifices a sheep. The medinas smell of it for days. It is deeply meaningful and also very visceral.
School holidays (mid-July to early September, two weeks at New Year) fill the riads and raise prices. Book early or go off-peak. Morocco rewards the visitor who comes when nobody else does.
