The Volcano Under the Cedar Trees
The macaques get all the attention. The volcano under the cedar forest gets none. It has been there since the Pleistocene.

Azrou is a Middle Atlas town at 1,250 metres, surrounded by the largest cedar forest in Morocco. The Cèdre Gouraud — a single cedar tree estimated at 800 years old — stands in the forest south of town. Barbary macaques live among the trees and are easily seen from the road.
The town itself is an Amazigh market centre. The Tuesday souk is one of the best in the Middle Atlas. Azrou is also known for its woodworking — cedar carved into furniture, bowls, and decorative pieces sold in the cooperative near the centre.
Azrou sits at the junction of the N13 (Meknes to Er Rachidia) and the road south to Midelt and the Ziz Gorge. This makes it a natural stopping point on the route from the imperial cities to the desert. The air is cool, the forests are dense, and in winter the mountains carry snow.

Neighborhoods
A Berber market town at 1,250 metres in the cedar highlands — the name means "rock" in Tamazight, a reference to the basalt outcrop at its centre. The Tuesday market draws people from the surrounding plateau villages. The town is a working Amazigh community rather than a tourist destination: the macaque forest outside it is the attraction, the town is what surrounds it.
Nature
The volcanic plateau of the Middle Atlas is scattered with crater lakes — Dayet Aoua, Dayet Ifrah, Dayet Hachlaf — clear, cold, and surrounded by cedar forest. Migratory birds use them as stopovers in spring and autumn. The lakes freeze in hard winters. In summer they are cool enough to swim in and empty enough to feel entirely private.
