Legend says Hercules rested here. The Phoenicians quarried millstones, leaving a rock aperture that looks remarkably like Africa. Whether intentional or pareidolia, the photograph is obligatory.

01

The Mythological Cave

Ancient writers placed one of Hercules' labours here — breaking through the rock to connect the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The cave is natural, carved by wave action, but human habitation goes back to the Neolithic. The most photographed feature is a sea-facing opening shaped like the outline of Africa (or South America, depending on your perspective). Stone-grinding circles on the cave floor are Phoenician — used to produce millstones for export.

02

The Opening

The Africa-shaped opening is the image. Light pours through it, the Atlantic crashes below. The cave interior is larger than expected — multiple chambers, including the upper areas where Neolithic communities sheltered.

03
