Mohammed VI Museum
Morocco's major art museum, opened 2014. Orientalist paintings (the European view) alongside contemporary Moroccan artists (the corrective). The white curves of the building make their own statement.
Morocco's major art museum opened in 2014 in a building designed by architect Karim Chakor. The collection focuses on Moroccan art from the 20th century forward — a corrective to the craft-focused museums elsewhere. The permanent collection includes orientalist paintings (the European view) alongside contemporary Moroccan artists (the corrective). The temporary exhibitions have included Picasso and Giacometti alongside emerging African artists. The curatorial ambition is international. The building itself is the statement — white curves, natural light, a café overlooking the gardens. The museum sits in the same district as the Oudaias Kasbah and Hassan Tower, making it easy to combine classical and contemporary Rabat. Best time: Morning (natural light in galleries) Allow: 1.5-2 hours Combine with: Oudaias Kasbah and Villa des Arts
