Place de la Libération

The main square of Larache, built by the Spanish as the Plaza de España and still carrying the proportions of a Spanish colonial plaza — arcaded on three sides, a central fountain, café terraces facing the Atlantic light. Jean Genet lived in a room above one of the cafés here for the last years of his life, walking to the Spanish cemetery every morning to tend his own grave plot.
