Corsair Quarter Salé
The network of lanes around the port where the Salé Rovers — the pirate republic that operated from this city in the 17th century — built their warehouses, their counting houses, and their slave pens. Miguel de Cervantes passed through here as a captive. Daniel Defoe used the Salé corsairs as the basis for Robinson Crusoe. The lanes are quiet now. The architecture is largely unchanged.
