Location
Ait Benhaddou village
If you've seen a film set in the desert, you've probably seen this ksar. Still partially inhabited. The pisé walls deteriorate; the residents repair.
01
The Film Set Everyone Knows
Aït Benhaddou appears in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and at least twenty other productions. The ksar — a fortified village of connected kasbahs — has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and a film location since the 1960s. The irony is that the ksar is largely depopulated. A few families remain on the hillside; most residents moved across the river to the modern village decades ago.
The original settlement predates the Almoravids. Its position on the caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara made it a staging post for trade in gold, salt, and slaves. The buildings you see today are mostly 17th-19th century, though they follow much older patterns.
02
The Ksar
Earthen towers, crenellated walls, and decorative pisé patterns climb the hillside in a cascade of red-ochre forms. The construction is rammed earth — the same material as Telouet, Tamnougalt, and every southern kasbah. The buildings are interconnected — you walk through one to reach the next, which was the defensive logic.
The top of the hill gives a panoramic view of the river valley and the modern village. The climb takes 15 minutes.
03
Visiting
On the N9 between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, about 30 km before Ouarzazate. Cross the river on foot (a concrete bridge or stepping stones depending on water level). No formal entry fee to the ksar itself, though some residents charge for guided walks through their houses. The climb to the summit is worth the effort.
It is the most visited ksar in Morocco and can feel overwhelmed by midday tour groups. Early morning or late afternoon is better.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds and better light. The red earth glows at golden hour.
Getting There
On the N9, 30 km northwest of Ouarzazate. Signposted from the main road.
Local Tip
Cross the river or use stepping stones. Slippery when wet.
Common Questions
A few families. Most residents moved to the modern village across the river. The ksar is partly maintained for tourism and film.
Yes. The exterior of the ksar appears in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and numerous other productions. Studios in nearby Ouarzazate handle the interiors.
Walking Distance
Nearby
We approach Ait Benhaddou from the river bed, not the car park. The morning light on the pisé walls is why we schedule this stop before noon.
