Dakhla Kitesurfing
Dakhla is consistently rated among the top five kitesurfing destinations in the world — the lagoon provides flat water for beginners, the open ocean provides waves for advanced riders, and the trade winds blow at 20-30 knots for most of the year without interruption. The kitesurfing infrastructure arrived in the 2000s and transformed a remote Saharan outpost into an international destination.
The lagoon south of Dakhla is one of the best kitesurfing locations in the world. Flat water, consistent wind (15–25 knots, nearly every day from March to November), warm water (20–24°C), and no obstacles. The lagoon is shallow — waist-deep in most places — which makes it forgiving for beginners and ideal for freestyle riders.
The kite schools and camps line the lagoon shore south of town. Dakhla Attitude, Dakhla Spirit, Westpoint — the camps range from budget to premium but all access the same water. The community is international: French, Brazilian, South African, Moroccan riders who follow the wind calendar between Dakhla, Tarifa, and Brazil.
The best months are April to October. Winter has wind but it is less consistent. The town itself has limited nightlife and entertainment — you come for the water and the wind, not for the après.
