Location
Dakhla Lagoon, Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab
A 40-kilometre lagoon on the edge of the Sahara where the wind never stops.
01
The Dakhla Kite
Dakhla sits on a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic in Morocco's deep south — Western Sahara territory, administered by Morocco since the Green March of 1975. The lagoon is 40 km long, shallow, warm, and wind-constant. It became one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations in the 2010s.
02
The Lagoon
Flat water, white sand, constant wind. The lagoon is separated from the Atlantic by a narrow peninsula. Kitesurf camps line the western shore. The town itself is functional — military presence, fishing port, new construction.
03
Visiting
Dakhla has an airport with flights from Casablanca. The town is remote — 1,700 km from Tangier. The lagoon is the reason to come. Kitesurf camps handle accommodation and equipment. Non-kiters come for the emptiness, the seafood, and the desert-meets-ocean landscape.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round for kitesurfing. Wind is constant. October-March for milder temperatures.
Getting There
Flights from Casablanca (2.5 hours). Driving from Marrakech takes 15+ hours.
Local Tip
Remote Atlantic lagoon. World-class kitesurfing November–April. Wind picks up afternoon. Flamingos in the shallows. Accommodation ranges from basic camps to luxury eco-lodges. Fly from Casablanca or drive 20+ hours.
Common Questions
Yes. Dakhla is well within Moroccan-administered territory and has significant military presence. Tourism infrastructure has grown substantially since 2015.
Dakhla is our deepest south journey — two days from Marrakech, another world entirely. The lagoon is worth every kilometre.
