The forty-kilometre lagoon of Dakhla where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic

A forty-kilometre lagoon at the edge of the Sahara, where the desert meets the Atlantic. Dakhla is one of the world's best kitesurfing spots — flat water, constant wind, no crowds. The town itself is remote, functional, and strange: a Saharan fishing port where the oyster farms share the lagoon with flamingos.

Dakhla is our deepest south journey — two days from Marrakech, another world entirely. The lagoon is worth every kilometre.
