Ettedgui Synagogue

Ettedgui Synagogue, Casablanca. Rededicated 2016. The King attended personally.

Rededicated 2016 with the King in attendance. The restoration that made a statement.

King Mohammed VI attended the rededication personally. 2016. A sitting monarch in a synagogue — in an Arab country. The photographs were distributed worldwide.

The Ettedgui was one of Casablanca's grand synagogues. It had fallen into disrepair as the community shrank. The royal restoration was not quiet — it was meant to be seen. Millions allocated. Heritage craftsmen. The same level of care given to the great mosques.

The gesture was political and genuine at the same time. Morocco's relationship with its Jewish heritage is not performative tolerance. It is constitutional. The 2011 document says so explicitly.
