Mellah of El Jadida

The Jewish quarter of El Jadida, established inside the Portuguese walls when Moroccan families resettled the city after 1769. The community that formed here was cosmopolitan — Moroccan Jews, descendants of Portuguese conversos, merchants from Gibraltar and Livorno. The architecture that remains is a layering of Portuguese, Moroccan, and Sephardic influences.
