Duration

45 minutes

Location

46 Rue Souk Ahal Fes, Medina

Morocco between 1870 and 1950 — Berber chiefs, Jewish merchants, ceremonies now forgotten. The rooftop café has mint tea and Atlas views away from the chaos below.

01

Sixty Thousand Photographs

Patrick Manac'h and Hamid Mergani opened this museum in 2009 after spending years collecting vintage photographs of Morocco — 60,000 images spanning 1870 to 1950. The collection documents a Morocco that no longer exists: tribal portraits, early Marrakech streetscapes, Atlas mountain villages before roads, Saharan caravans before trucks.

02

The Riad

A restored medina riad, three floors. The photographs are arranged chronologically and thematically. The rooftop terrace has an Atlas view and a café.

03

Visiting

In the northern medina near the Ben Youssef Madrasa. Allow 45 minutes. The photographs are the kind of archival material that changes how you see the medina outside — faces, streets, and rituals from 150 years ago overlaid on the present. The rooftop café is a good pause.

Best Time to Visit

Anytime. The rooftop is best in late afternoon.
