The collection that explains Fes: the blue ceramics, the Berber carpets, the instruments from the Qarawiyyin. The Andalusian gardens are the city's finest; summer concerts continue a royal tradition.

01

A Palace for Craft

Dar Batha was built in the 1880s as a royal palace — a reception house where the sultan could hold court when visiting Fes. It was converted to a museum of Fassi arts and crafts in 1915 under the French Protectorate, making it one of the oldest museums in Morocco.

The collection focuses on what Fes has always done better than anywhere: woodwork, ceramics, zellige, embroidery, leather, and metalwork. The famous Fes blue ceramics — cobalt-glazed pottery that is the city's most recognisable craft export — are well represented. The pieces span centuries, from Marinid-era carved wood to 19th-century embroidered textiles.

02

The Andalusian Garden

The museum is set around an Andalusian garden with old trees, a central fountain, and tiled pathways. The garden is arguably the best reason to visit — it is one of the most peaceful green spaces in the Fes medina. The exhibition rooms open off the garden in the traditional palace layout.

The building mixes Fassi and Andalusian styles — carved stucco, painted cedarwood ceilings, zellige courtyard — with the scale and formality of a 19th-century reception palace. The architecture is the context for the collection: you see zellige on the museum walls and zellige in the display cases, centuries apart, using the same techniques.

03

Visiting

Dar Batha sits between the two main medina entrances — Bab Boujloud and Bab Guissa — on Place de l'Istiqlal. It is one of the easier museums to find in Fes. The garden is worth 20 minutes even if the exhibitions do not interest you.

Note: the museum has undergone periodic closures for renovation. Check locally before visiting. When open, it is one of the least-crowded cultural spaces in the medina.

Best Time to Visit

Morning for the garden light. The museum is cool inside — a good midday option in summer. Check opening status before visiting.
