01

The Holy Town

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is Morocco's holiest town — the burial place of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty and great-grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. Until 2005, non-Muslims were not permitted to stay overnight. The town drapes over two hills above the ruins of Volubilis, visible 3 km to the north.

02

The Town

White buildings cascade down two slopes — the Green Hill and the White Hill — meeting at a valley containing the sanctuary. The cylindrical minaret of the Moulay Idriss Zaouia is the only cylindrical minaret in Morocco. The town feels frozen — small, traditional, genuinely religious in a way that Marrakech and Fes are not.

03

Visiting

30 km from Meknes. Non-Muslims cannot enter the sanctuary but can walk the town freely and view it from outside. The Saturday souk is one of the best small-town markets in Morocco. Combine with Volubilis (3 km).

Best Time to Visit

Saturday for the souk. Morning for the best light on the white town.

Getting There

30 km from Meknes. Grands taxis or drive. Combine with Volubilis.

Local Tip

Morocco's holiest town. Non-Muslims could not stay overnight until 2005. The shrine of Moulay Idriss I (founder of the first Moroccan dynasty, 789) is closed to non-Muslims but visible from a nearby terrace. The cylindrical minaret is unique in Morocco. Combine with Volubilis, 4km away.

Common Questions

You can visit the town and walk the streets freely. The sanctuary (zaouia) is closed to non-Muslims. Overnight stays are now permitted.

We pair Moulay Idriss with Volubilis — they face each other across the valley. Lunch on a rooftop here, looking at Roman ruins, is one of our favourite stops.
