Thirteenth-century manuscripts on gazelle skin in the Tamegroute zaouia library

Tamegroute Library

A desert library holding 13th-century manuscripts at the edge of the Sahara.

A zaouia library holding manuscripts dating to the thirteenth century — Quranic texts, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine written on gazelle skin. The Nasiriyya brotherhood that maintains it has been in Tamegroute since 1575. The green pottery workshops next door use a glaze formula specific to this village.

Tamegroute is a stop on our Draa Valley route south of Zagora. The library opens by request — we arrange it. The manuscripts are on gazelle skin.

Tips

The Zaouia Nassiriya library holds manuscripts dating to the 13th century — Qurans, astronomy, mathematics, Sufi texts. A custodian will show you a few treasures behind glass. The collection once numbered 40,000 volumes; what remains is a fraction. Photography is usually not permitted. 15 minutes is enough.

The intelligence layer. History, culture, craft.
