A potter shaping green-glazed ceramics in Tamegroute's traditional workshops

Tamegroute Pottery

The only source of Tamegroute green — a copper glaze fired in underground kilns at the edge of the desert.

The green ceramics of Tamegroute are made nowhere else. The distinctive glaze — a copper-based formula — has been passed through families in this village at the edge of the Sahara for centuries. The workshops are open, the kilns are wood-fired, and the finished pieces cost a fraction of what they sell for in Marrakech.

The pottery workshops are next door to the library. We visit both — the green glaze is made nowhere else, and the prices here are what the pieces are actually worth.

Tips

Tamegroute green is a specific glaze colour — a deep, slightly uneven green produced by a mix of copper, manganese, and silica fired in underground kilns. The workshops are behind the main road. You can watch potters working and buy directly. Prices are significantly cheaper than Marrakech. The glaze varies kiln to kiln — no two pieces are identical.
