Tamnougalt Kasbah
One of the oldest kasbahs in the Draa Valley, still partially inhabited. The mellah — Jewish quarter — remains visible within the walls, a reminder of diverse communities sharing desert fortresses.
One of the oldest kasbahs in the Draa Valley, Tamnougalt dates to the 16th century and is still partially inhabited. The Jewish quarter — the mellah — remains visible within the walls, a reminder of the diverse communities that once shared these desert fortresses. The kasbah sits six kilometers from Agdz, where the main road enters the Draa Valley from the mountains. The guardian will show you through rooms that vary from restored to ruined, explaining the layout: family quarters here, storage there, the synagogue in the mellah section. The view from the roof takes in the palmery and the mountains beyond. The kasbah was built to control trade — dates, henna, salt moving north; slaves and gold moving south. The trade is gone; the fortification remains, adapting to tourism as it once adapted to commerce. Best time: Morning or late afternoon Allow: 1 hour Combine with: Drive through the Draa Valley to Zagora
