01

The Lagoon Town

Oualidia is a coastal village built around a crescent lagoon — one of the few natural harbours on Morocco's Atlantic coast. The lagoon is shallow, warm, and protected from the Atlantic swell by a sandbar. It is Morocco's oyster capital: the beds were established by the French in the 1950s and still produce.

02

The Lagoon

A curved lagoon fringed by low cliffs, salt marshes, and oyster farms. Flamingos and waders feed in the shallows. The village is small — a few hotels, a strip of restaurants, a ruined kasbah on the headland.

03

Visiting

Between El Jadida and Safi on the coast road. The lagoon is the draw — kayaking, swimming, oyster tasting. Lunch at one of the lagoon restaurants is the standard visit. The oysters are fresh, cheap, and excellent.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn. Summer weekends are crowded with Moroccan families.

Getting There

Between El Jadida and Safi on the Atlantic coast road. About 3 hours from Marrakech.

Local Tip

Atlantic lagoon where oysters grow in the shadow of a royal palace. Farms visible at low tide. Ostréa II is the best-known restaurant. Flamingos and herons in the shallows. Quieter than Essaouira.

Common Questions

Excellent. Farmed in the lagoon since the 1950s. Served fresh at waterfront restaurants for very little money.

Oualidia is a lunch stop on our coastal route between El Jadida and Essaouira. Oysters from the lagoon, flamingos in the shallows — it's the quietest hour on the coast.
