Petit Socco

The small square at the heart of the old medina — Café Central on one corner, narrow lanes radiating in every direction. In the 1950s when Tangier was an International Zone with no customs, no taxes, and no extradition treaty, this was where the currency traders, the hashish dealers, the writers, and the diplomats all circled each other. Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch in a room above the square.
