Seven Days, Ten Days

Before You Go

Seven Days, Ten Days

Two itineraries — one for the short trip, one for the trip you wish you had booked

Seven Days: The Essential.

Day 1-2: Marrakech. The medina, the souks, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs. Dinner at Jemaa el-Fna the first night. A quieter restaurant the second. One morning in the Jardin Majorelle before the crowds.

Day 3: Over the Atlas to the south. The Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at Aït Benhaddou. Night in the Dades Valley or Ouarzazate.

Day 4: Todra Gorge in the morning, drive to Merzouga. Camel ride into the dunes. Night in the Sahara.

Day 5: Sunrise in the desert. Long drive back to Marrakech, or break it with a night in the Draa Valley near Zagora.

Day 6: Essaouira. A day of wind, fresh fish, and a medina where nobody follows you. The bus from Marrakech takes 2.5 hours.

Day 7: Return to Marrakech. Last morning in the medina. Hammam. Flight home.

This works, but it is tight. The desert drive is long and you will feel it.

Ten Days: The Country.

Day 1-2: Marrakech. As above, but add the Medersa Ben Youssef, the Mellah, and a cooking class.

Day 3-4: The south. Over the Atlas to Aït Benhaddou, through the Dades Gorge, night in a kasbah. Next day to Merzouga. Night in the Sahara.

Day 5: Morning in the dunes, then drive north toward Fes via Midelt. Night in Midelt or Ifrane. This avoids backtracking.

Day 6-7: Fes. Two full days. The medina, the tanneries, the madrasas, the food. Fes requires time — it does not reveal itself to people in a hurry.

Day 8: Train to Rabat or Casablanca. Half a day in Rabat (Kasbah of the Udayas, Chellah) or Casablanca (Hassan II Mosque). Night train or late train back to Marrakech.

Day 9: Essaouira. Wind, fish, freedom.

Day 10: Marrakech. Hammam. Last shopping. Flight home.

The 10-day version gives you the imperial cities, the desert, the coast, and the mountains. It also gives you the in-between — the hours in the car watching the landscape change, which is where Morocco actually lives.
