Skala du Port

The sea bastion where Orson Welles filmed Othello in 1949. Climb the ramp to find cannons, seagulls, and the sound of Atlantic waves. The fishing fleet fills the view below.

The sea bastion guards the harbour entrance. Climb the ramp to find yourself on a platform with cannons, seagulls, and the sound of waves hitting stone. Orson Welles filmed Othello here in 1949; Game of Thrones came much later. The view takes in the fishing fleet — blue boats crowded against the docks — and the Ile de Mogador offshore. The port itself is working, not picturesque for tourists. Fish are landed, auctioned, and carried away. The seagulls know the schedule. The bastion connects to the woodworking stalls where craftsmen make thuya-wood boxes and furniture. The smell of sawdust mixes with salt air. The walk from Skala du Port to Skala de la Ville covers the harbour's full arc. Best time: Morning (fishing activity) or sunset Allow: 30 minutes Combine with: Port fish lunch and ramparts walk
