Taourirt Kasbah in ouarzazate, Morocco - Kasbahs

Taourirt Kasbah

The Glaoui stronghold rises like a sand castle from Ouarzazate. Part museum, part inhabited ruin — the contrast between restored and collapsing sections tells the story of these buildings.

The Glaoui family controlled southern Morocco for generations, and Taourirt was their Ouarzazate stronghold. The kasbah rises like a sand castle from the town centre — towers, terraces, and the distinctive pisé construction that defines the region. Part of the kasbah is still inhabited. Families live in rooms that once housed servants; the state rooms have become a museum. The contrast between sections tells the story of these buildings: how they decline, how they survive, how restoration chooses what to save. The interior is cool and dark, a maze of stairs and passages. Some rooms show restored decoration — painted ceilings, carved plaster. Others show the raw construction. The rooftop offers views over Ouarzazate and the mountains beyond. Best time: Morning (cooler inside) Allow: 1 hour Combine with: Atlas Studios (5km west)
