The Glaoui stronghold rises like a sand castle from Ouarzazate. Part museum, part inhabited ruin — the contrast between restored and collapsing sections tells the story of these buildings.

01

The Glaoui Kasbah of Ouarzazate

Kasbah Taourirt was the eastern stronghold of the Glaoui family — while Thami held Marrakech and Telouet, this kasbah controlled the road east toward the Draa Valley and the Sahara. The complex is enormous — over 300 rooms — and was a functioning town-within-a-town for the Glaoui clan and their dependents.

02

The Complex

Pisé construction, towers, decorated reception rooms with painted ceilings. Partially restored — some rooms are museum-quality, others are bare. The maze of corridors and courtyards gives the best sense of scale of any kasbah in the south.

03

Common Questions

Same family — the Glaouis. Telouet was the mountain stronghold; Taourirt was the desert-side base.

Taourirt is a Glaoui kasbah in the middle of Ouarzazate. We visit because the interior — the painted ceilings, the women's quarters — is the best-preserved in the south.
