Maimonides' House
Where the most important Jewish philosopher lived from 1159 to 1165. Not a museum. Not marked. The community knows.
Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon — Maimonides — fled Córdoba and lived in Fes from approximately 1159 to 1165. He was in his twenties. He was writing what would become the Commentary on the Mishnah, the work that systematised Jewish oral law.
His house in the old medina is still identified, near the Qarawiyyin — the world's oldest university. It is not a museum. It is not formally marked. But the Jewish community of Fes knows where it is. They have always known.
The six years between Córdoba and Cairo — the Fes years — were when a refugee became the most important Jewish thinker since the Talmudic age.
