Bab Marrakech

The main gate of Essaouira, opening toward the road to Marrakech. All overland trade entered here — spices, textiles, slaves, and later the tourists who replaced the caravans. The gate is Moorish in form but was built by a French architect in the 18th century, which is the paradox that defines the entire city.
