Chouara Tannery Viewpoint

The leather merchant terraces above the Chouara tanneries offer the view that has made Fes tanneries one of the most photographed industrial sites in the world. What the photographs rarely convey: the smell of the white vats filled with pigeon dung, the silence of the workers moving between the circles of colour, the fact that this process has operated here since the 11th century.
