Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque
Founded in 859 CE by Fatima al-Fihri, a woman from a wealthy Tunisian merchant family who spent her entire inheritance to build it. It is the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Non-Muslims may not enter. The courtyard — visible through the doorways — is tiled in a pattern that has been read by scholars for twelve centuries.
