Fes el-Jdid

The "new city" built by the Marinids in the 13th century as a royal enclosure separate from the old medina. It contains the royal palace, the mellah, and the grande mosquée. The golden gates of the royal palace are one of the most reproduced images of Morocco. They face a square that is never open to visitors.
