Mellah of Fes
The Jewish quarter of Fes, established in 1438 — one of the oldest mellahs in Morocco. At its height, 20,000 Jews lived within its walls. The distinctive architecture survives: overhanging upper floors that nearly touch across the lanes, iron balconies, carved wooden lintels painted in faded blue. Most families emigrated after 1948. The architecture stayed.
